Managing Foot Blisters

Blisters of the feet are very common especially in those playing competitive sport. Tennis players, football players, soccer players, basketballers, runners and netballers all experience blisters of the feet when placing the feet under extreme stress.

What Causes Foot Blisters ?
Blisters of the foot are caused by excessive friction to the skin - in other words excessive rubbing. When the friction persists the skin begins to break down allowing infection to enter through the skin.

How Are Blisters Treated?
Blisters of the foot should not be broken as this allows infection to proliferate. If blisters do burst allowing the release of fluid then it is important to dress the blisters properly with antiseptic and a sterile dressing.

Prevention Of Foot Blisters.

  • wear socks or stockings with shoes
  • wear two pairs of socks when playing sport
  • ensure new shoes are fitted correctly
  • use hypoallergenic taping on areas prone to blistering
  • use talcum powder inside the socks to help reduce friction

    Consult your Podiatrist if foot blisters persist as it may be indicative of a foot fungal infection or tinea pedis.
