Pain in the heel can be caused by a number of different conditions. Some more common causes include:

1. Plantar fasciitis or plantar fasciosis
2. Heel spur or heel spur fracture
3. Stress fracture of the heel
4. Severs disease (heel pain in children)
5. Arthritis
6. Heel bursitis
7. Tarsal tunnel syndrome

Other less common causes include tumours of the heel bone. Unilateral heel pain should always be treated with suspicion especially when conventional heel pain treatment has failed.

Radiographic examination and/or scans are very helpful in ascertaining the correct diagnosis and assist in formulating the right management plan.
